The Leeds Light Festival 2019 is in its 15th year and its one of the most impressive light festivals in the world with 80,000 visitors. Here's what you can expect to see and ideas of where to go or plan your journey.

    Getting to Leeds Light Festival

For a full list of transport options car parks click here

If you are coming from the south or via M1 the Tetley car park is a good place to park since it means you don't have to go through all the traffic in Leeds Centre and everything is a short walk from there.

Plan: Where to go at the Leeds Light Night: Top things to see

If you're visiting the Light Night for the first time and want to know the best places to go here is a good route to follow to ensure you see the big attractions.

The best exhibits will be centred around these areas so a good route might be to start at by a walk up the main street of Briggate and into the Victoria Quarter / Arcade Zone, then down The Headrow (Town Hall & Leeds Library for some warmth) and onto Millenium Square,  followed by City Square / Station Zone (projections onto the Queens Hotel) and across to Trinity Shopping centre followed before getting back to the bottom of Briggate.

There will be timed shows as well as projections and art going on the whole time in all these areas along with market stalls and an array of street artists and performers. See below for the full list of events/shows. You can just walk around and see lots of different things going on almost everywhere you go on the route above.

You can also take a free water taxi from Leeds Station (near the Hilton Hotel) to Leeds Dock (see the map for more info) and there are plenty of other venues from the First Direct Arena projecting special lights onto its roof to the Playhouse, Opera North to name a few. See the MAP below for the full list.

New this year in 2019 £1.99. Currently the app, although it helps contribute to event funding, its a little light on information and we found the website has a lot more useful information on it. However, to help keep the event free its well worth buying the paper guide book for Leeds Light night which has a lot of good info inside.

  • How to Choose a Projector Guide

5 things to think about when choosing a projector

Though the job of a projector may seem simple and straightforward, choosing a new one can be as complicated as choosing a new computer. With so many different manufacturers and models to choose from, it’s important to have a clear idea of what you’re looking for before you begin. We have put together a list of five aspects to consider to help you narrow down what may seem like an impossibly long list of options.

    Size

    M550 Plus in the hand

These days, projectors are available in a wide variety of sizes, ranging from large, high-end units for cinemas and large performance spaces to portable units small and light enough to fit into your jacket pocket, and all sizes in between. To figure out which size is best suited for your needs, ask yourself – where will I be using the projector? If you plan on installing the unit in a conference room, consider a larger ceiling-mounted unit. If you’ll be moving the projector from room to room, consider a medium-size tabletop unit. If you need something that fits in your briefcase for presentations to potential clients, consider a small, portable model.

    Throw

benq w1600 ultra short throw projector

Though often overlooked, throw – the distance between the projector and the projection surface – is as important as size. While most projectors will be able to ‘throw’ an image over an intermediate distance, say a few meters, only certain models are capable of projecting an image from a distance of less than one meter. If you anticipate using the projector in particularly tight spaces, consider a short-throw or ultra short-throw (UST) model. Some models are also able to project from odd angles, or onto non-flat surfaces.

    Resolution

    Resoloution

Projectors are available in a wide variety of resolutions, from XGA to WXGA, to 720p, 1080p, and 4K-UHD. While the acronyms can be confusing, it’s best to start by thinking about how you’ll be using the projector. For simple presentations on smaller screens a WXGA projector will be just fine. Larger screens and video content will be better suited to 1080p projectors, while 4K-UHD projectors are the new trend for very large screens or graphically-intense multimedia content.

    Brightness

    M550 Plus Outdoors

What brightness you need entirely depends on where you intend to use the projector and if you need it to be portable or not. If you need light weight and portable but still viewable in daylight, then the ideal brightness range is between 400 - 1000 ANSI lumens for small groups/presentations of 5 to 20 people. For non-portable projection, and typical use in indoor spaces, 3,000 ANSI lumens should be sufficient. For bright or larger indoor spaces, consider looking for at least 4,000-6,000 ANSI lumens, or even more for spaces receiving direct natural light. For even large venue applications, the brightness can go even go up to 18,000 ANSI lumens for a single chip DLP projector.

    Connectivity

    Connectivity

Last but not least, don’t forget to consider what kind of computer, mobile device, or media source you’ll be using and how to connect it to the projector. An HDMI connection is most common. Make sure to check whether or not your projector has wireless connectivity too. Most of our Ultra portable projectors come with wireless screen mirroring as standard. If your projector doesn't have wireless capability don't worry, there are plenty of solutions for adding this feature, consider using a wireless dongle or wireless HDMI.

    I'm still unsure

While choosing the right projector can be a challenge, the guidelines above will help you determine what’s best for your needs and your space. With a wide range of models ranging from large, ceiling-mounted units to the Ultra portable projectors, Personal Projector Ltd offers something for every space and every budget.

If you are unsure on what is meant by Ansi lumens or would like to find out what lumens are, we have written a great guide which tells you everything that you need to know, you find it here.

There are a lot of makes of projector out there that will overstate their specifications, especially the lumen count, we have a handy guide on what to look out for and brands to avoid which you can find here.

If you need that personal touch you can contact us directly via LIVE CHAT, E-mail or on 01924 589 589, we will be happy to give you more information and help you to find what you are looking for.

  • Android Projectors: What does this mean? How do they work?

    What is an Android projector?

An Android projector is a projector that runs Android software to power its operating system. Think of Android as a computer inside your projector allowing you to run programmes and interface as you would when using a PC.

All projectors will have a form of operating system allowing you to alter various settings and set up the initial connection with your media outlet. Android projectors function in a similar way but have the added bonus of being able to run various applications, essentially turning your projector into its own media outlet.

    Android Projectors confused

    How does it work?

The Android projector itself works in a similar way to your phone, once you have connected the device to the internet via Wi-Fi you can download various apps such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

The ability to be able to use applications via the projector means that you don't have to connect it to your PC or other device in order to stream content. This also allows you total freedom with your projector and is why the Android OS is used in a lot of the portable projectors that are currently on the market.

    Common misconceptions

There are a couple of common misconceptions that come with the use of Android software being used in a projector and we will answer them here:

    1. If you own an Android phone yourself it doesn't need to be on the same version as the projector in order to work with it. Most projectors will use older versions of Android as they don't need to be constantly updated unlike mobile phones.
    2. If you own an iPhone it will still be able to work with the projector, this is normally done via screen mirroring over Wi-Fi. The operating systems not being the same doesn't have a bearing on the connectivity.

    Where can I get one?

If all of this has piqued your interest and you want to get your hands on an Android projector then you can view our range here.
