  • Outdoor Projection: Create an Outdoor Cinema

Try something new this summer and experience an outdoor cinema with friends and family. Whether you are looking to project movies or just watch the game on the big screen either in the garden or camping, we have you covered with every screen and projector option to suit every budget.

Use a projector for multiple applications other than just for outdoors such as creating a home cinema entertainment system on the big screen, gaming, zoom, work and more.

Read more to find out tips and tricks on maximising your outdoor cinema experience. See recommendations below for ultra portable projectors, bright lamp based projectors and screens.

Tips & Tricks for Projecting Outdoors

Projecting outside during the day can be tricky as the sunlight can fade images just like on a TV, however there are plenty of solutions to help maximise the viewing experience. Here are just some below:

    • - Using a gazebo / canopy is a great way to block off direct sunlight and stop the projected image fading
    • - Use an Ambient Light Rejection (ALR) screen with a high gain to increase the brightness (some ALR screens are only suitable with UST projectors, please check that your projector is compatible with the screen).
    • - Use a portable projector in a tent and enjoy a memorable camping trip.
    • - Alternatively, project in the shade where the sun isn’t facing

Other safety tips for projecting outdoors:

    • - Projecting outdoors can be cold, especially at night, be sure to bring blankets, covers or electric heaters to keep you comfortable and warm whilst you enjoy the movie.
    • - Always remember to keep the projectors away from any water, turn off sprinklers and move drinks away from the projector.
    • - Don't forget an extension lead to plug in your devices outside, preferably waterproof to avoid any damages.
    • - Remember to bring the equipment indoors at night and keep in a safe place.
    • - Keep cables out of the way, save any accidents and secure them down.

    Creating Your Outdoor Cinema

When creating an outdoor cinema choosing the right projector and screen for your setup is critical. We have selected a range of options from high powered lamp projectors, portable LED projectors to a range of outdoor screens to suit every budget.

These will work in shaded areas during the day, at dusk or at night, providing glorious images up to 120" that will transport you  into the movie or the game.

High Brightness Lamp / Laser Based Projectors

These projectors are ideal for projecting outdoors with their high brightness. There is a trade off between lamp projectors and portable projectors. Portable projectors offer portability, wireless connectivity, LED light source, android and built in battery whereas lamp based projectors generally speaking only offer high brightness, without all these other features, and are mains powered so an extension cable may be needed.

Bear in mind when reviewing lumens on Amazon or Ebay lumens are often quoted at 6 to 20 times the real ansi lumen figure so be sure to compare like with like. For example, some of the 4000 - 5000 ansi lumen models below would equate to 100,000 lumens using the marketing lumens method of comparison!

Luxury All-In-One Projector, Speaker, Screen Bundle

Chiq A5U 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector & Screen Bundle - From £2,955.00

Whilst a 2500 ANSI lumen projector may not be the first choice for an outdoor projector, the CHiQ A5U is worth considering due to its separate high powered speakers and highly understated lumens. The A5U has the equivalent brightness of some other manufacturers whose stated advertised lumens are 4,000 - 5,500 ansi lumens so don't be put off by the low advertised ansi lumens. Bear in mind when reviewing lumens on Amazon or Ebay lumens are often quoted at 6 to 20 times the real ansi lumen figure so be sure to compare like with like.

In addition,  using the A5U with an ALR screen drastically reduces any ambient light issues making it a great high end home cinema for indoors or outdoors.

It's also worth considering the CHiQ E5F36 which is an alternative high brightness 3600 ansi lumen laser UST projector with Full HD at a much lower price.

The all-in-one A5U bundle can be easily setup by placing the A5U on a table and projecting on to the mounted ALR screen. Its separate 40 watt designer speakers provide amazing quality sound even when outdoors. The screen can be mounted on most surfaces including a fence, shed or wall and can be unhooked quickly and be flat packed away for easy storage.

Note: None of the screens are waterproof.

Ultra short throw (UST) projectors like the A5U only work with fixed frame screens, these can either be standard fixed frame or ALR screens.

    Portable: All-In-One Projectors

Portable projectors are not as bright as lamp based projectors but have more features such as built in battery, android operating system, wireless connectivity and more.  However there will be plenty of projectors on Amazon claiming to be much brighter than they actually are by 6 to 20 times the true figure!

Portable projectors are a perfect all-in-one solution when projecting at night, in a tent / gazebo or in the shade.

All the portable models all have standard TRIPOD MOUNTS on the base of the projector so you can put them on a mini tripod eg on a table or on a large floor standing tripod. You can also simply mount them on any flat surface but the tripods help angle the projector onto the screen and are a well worth while accessory to invest in. £14 - £29.

    Outdoor  / Indoor Screen Options:

Choose from a range of projector screens for use both indoors and outdoors. Options include fixed frame, portable, easy setup or even Ambient Light Rejection (ALR) to reduce sunlight.

Note, none of these screens are waterproof and will need to be taken down at the first site of rain however they can be used indoors and outdoors.

Here are some useful screens for outdoor use

    • Inflatable Screens (140")
    • Ambient Light Rejection (ALR) Screens (Fixed frame flat packed)
    • Fixed Frame
    • Wall / ceiling screens ideal to fix on a wall or shed
    • Portable Screens (tripod, fast fold from 80" to 140")

Ambient Light Rejection (ALR) Screens for use with UST Projectors

With new ambient light rejection technology, create a more impressive and brighter image in daylight conditions. ALR material is designed to reflect the projected image, promoting the deep black levels and vibrant colours while absorbing the ambient light to prevent the image from fading.

Please note, some ALR screens only work with ultra short throw projectors although it is possible to have ALR for non UST models so it is important to take advice first. Please contact us via email, live chat or by phone.

There are two separate options for ambient light rejection screens to be used outdoors.

    CHiQ 100” S-CK100 ALR Screen

    100" Ambient Light Rejection Screen

With CHiQs advanced material technology, the S-CK series offers a screen gain of 0.8 while enhancing the image contrast by 20 times making it perfect for brighter areas whether that be your garden, shed or lounge.

See more ALR/CLR screens here: https://www.personalprojector.co.uk/accessories-screens/screens/alr-screens.html

    Inflatable 140" Outdoor Projection Screen

The inflatable 140" projection screen is the ideal screen for your outdoor cinema. This packs down to a manageable size and once fully set up delivers a monster 140" viewable screen size.

Setting up this portable inflatable screen is simple. Simply use the included pump to inflate the screen in seconds and attach the screen fabric which can be front (standard) or rear projection (optional) !

See the video below to see how fast this huge outdoor projector screen inflates.

    Portable Screens

We have a wide choice of screen options for indoor and outdoor use that divide into fast fold screens with flight cases that go from 80" to 140", alternatively we have 80" lightweight tripod projector screens.

    Huge Portable Screen 4m wide

When using lightweight projector screens such as the 80" Tripod Screen, it is recommended using tent pegs, sandbags or rope tensioner to keep the screen safely in place.

    Tripod Screen

Electric / Manual Pull Down Screens

These wall or ceiling mounted screens fix with ease to a shed, wall or fence panel. They are designed for indoor use so as with all screens its essential to make sure they can be quickly removed in case the weather changes.

  • Sports projectors: T3's choices and the Best Alternatives

If you're looking for the true big screen stadium feeling then there's no better entertainment system than a projector. All encompassing 100" visuals and vibrant colours are easily achievable, but which models should be looking for?

T3 magazine's latest State Of The Art feature brings three projectors onto the pitch for a hat-trick of easy installation, great visuals and good value for money. We will go a step further and provide some super-sub alternatives eager to get off the bench.

    Optoma HD39Darbee Projector

With plenty of easy to use buttons and wheels the Optoma HD39Darbee was T3's most usable with "winning selection of image presets" and "generous amount of vertical lens shift". So it's easy to set up.

It also boasts Darbee processing power meaning it can handle fast motion on the "Hi-Def setting, team colours positively zing". Ideal for sports and gaming the Optoma HD39Darbee was crowned the winner of the three way contest- securing a 5 star Rating and a T3 Platinum award.

Epson EH-LS100 Ultra Short Throw projector

With a massive 4000 lumens T3 remarked the Epson had "class leading brightness" but also thought it was let down by its hefty 11kg weight and huge size. With Ultra Short throw you can get 100" images from mere centimetres from your target surface but if you'd rather not have this coffee table sized unit take centre stage then a traditional approach might be better.

    BenQ W1050 Home cinema Projector

T3 felt the BenQ W1050 scored well on the value for money round, saying it fell into the "budget category but this model comes last in the test due it being noisy on full brightness and the supplied remote is awkward to use so other entry level alternatives may be more sought after.

Our top alternative sports projectors: The Super Subs

    Acer W1600 Projector

Ultra short projection means you can literally plonk a projector on any table and put it directly against the wall to project a cinema sized image. It has many advantages not least of which it means there is no trailing wires, electric cables to the ceiling and installing projector mounts, but it also means nobody can walk in front of the device.

The styling is excellent with powerful inbuilt 10 watt speakers and the brightness is a huge 3,300 ansi lumens which is easily enough to view in daylight conditions. It handles fast moving images well too providing full HD.

    Acer P1502 Projector

Everyone wants full HD but for under £600 you don't often get true native 1080p resolution, so to get that crisp HD image with a whopping 3400 ANSI lumens of brightness is a great deal. For £550 the Acer P10502 projector offers a full HD, bright and sharp image with colorboost technology for a massive 20,000:1 active contrast ratio. High end spec, entry level pricing.

    Casio XJ-L8300HN 4K DLP Projector

The one thing the above projectors still lack though is the combination of everything in one box.  Imagine a combination of high brightness projection, ideal for even a bright room, coupled with ultra high definition 4k HDR and fast moving sports images. If you mix that with the added advantages of LED laser projection and zero maintenance with 30000 hour lamp life then the Casio XJ-L8300HN is the perfect alternative to the Epson, BenQ and Optoma offerings albeit in a larger size than the Benq.

So if you want true-to-life visuals and you've got space to spare then the Casio XJ-L8300HN 4K DLP Projector is the ultimate in big screen entertainment. Able to operate at 60fps the Casio is ideal for fluid sports and with the stunning 4K resolution at 5000 Ansi lumens you're getting vividly realistic colours to bring the big game to your living room.

Philips' Screeneo 2.0 is out of stock across UK & Europe due to 2 collapses of the company that held the license for this product.  As of September 2018 there are no active UK distributors of Screeneo so if you are looking for some good alternatives here are some options!

The Vivitek DH765Z-UST laser projector with zero bulb replacements / maintenance and the stunning Benq W1600UST home cinema projector. Also watch out for an increase in fake chinese products where the descriptions and lumens are ludicrously exaggerated by over 10 times such as the Wemax One by Xiaomi.

    Vivitek DH765Z-UST

The Vivitek DH765Z-UST is one of the closest alternatives to the Philips Screeneo 2 but works better for those wanting a much brighter image in a normally lit room. The Vivitek projector has 4000 lumens so is double the 2000 lumens of brightness on the Screeneo which is a major benefit if you want to use it in your lounge to replace your normal TV and not have to draw the curtains.

Vivitek DH765Z Ultra Short Throw High Brightness Laser Projector

The other advantage of the Vivitek DH765Z is that its a laser projector with no lamp so it means you will not incur expensive bulb cost replacements with over 30,000 hour "lamp" life instead of just 6,000 hr lamp life. So although the Vivitek DH765Z-UST is more expensive than the Screeneo 2 HDP2510 there will be significantly lower running costs on the Vivitek laser projector which makes up for the added extra cost.

The Vivitek is also ultra short throw and as you can see in the image you can put this right up against the wall and project an absolutely huge image 3 or 4 times the size of your TV.

Whilst its speaker system is only 10 watt speakers compared to the Screeneo's 26w you can of course connect an external audio system too. The smaller speakers also has the added benefit of making the Vivitek projector smaller and lighter taking up less space.

The Vivitel DH765Z-UST was not originally designed for home cinema enthusiasts,  so without those high contrast ratios and deep blacks it may not sport the exact same image quality as the Screeneo. Also without AcuMotion, or frame interpolation technology, sports and high speed scenes may be harder to view. However, the Vivitek projector will be well suited to those wanting a brighter ultra short throw image with lower running costs in a smaller unit than the Screeneo 2. You won't find a maintenance free projector at a staggering 4000 lumens anywhere else without paying upwards of £10,000!

BenQ W1600UST ultra short throw home cinema projector

Place this stylish projector just inches from the wall and you'll get the  full HD 1080p cinematic experience without any installation costs! The BenQ W1600UST also offers a staggering 3300 ansi lumens of brightness so you can keep that quality crisp and bright in every home lighting environment.

Acer V7500, 2500 Lumen Full HD/3D Home Cinema Projector

    acer-v7500-1

The award-winning Acer V7500 is near the top of the tree this Christmas! Boasting an incredible 2500 Lumen lightshow to back up its revolutionary software and sophisticated colour technology, it's no surprise it comes recommended by Home Cinema Choice magazine.

Inside its trendy white exterior is a range of seriously impressive features, including an Ambient Light Sensor to automatically adjust the image to suit the brightness of your surroundings, 4 Corner keystone correction and RGBRGB colour wheel for vivid colours. It also boasts a whopping 20,000:1 contrast ratio, meaning its picture quality is hard to beat, whether you're watching a film in a darkened room or sport on a bright Saturday afternoon. It isn't short throw, but it does have a massive max image size of 300", over twice the size of the Screeneo for less than half the cost! If you wanted a Screeneo for home cinema or sport, the V7500 has you covered!

Acer H6517ST, 3000 Lumen Short Throw Full HD/3D DLP Projector

    acer_h6517st-1

A mighty short throw projector that can project a huge screen just a metre from your projection surface, the H6517ST might not be the most snappily-titled projector, but it's ideal for cinema, gaming and more!

At 3000 Lumens, it can project a crystal clear image in even bright sunlight, meaning you can get Full HD in a billion colours and flicker-free 3D at 300 inches diagonally. It has a range of automatic and manual image adjustment controls so it's a doddle to set up and get that big-screen feeling from the comfort of your living room. If you're looking for a projector that can produce a massive, clear image even in the most cramped Christmas living room, you might want to put the H6517ST on your Christmas list.

Acer H7550ST, 3000 Lumen Short Throw Full HD/3D Projector

    h7550st_projector_front1

Packing a heavyweight punch in a lightweight frame, the H7550ST is a short throw projector with the power to turn your front room into a multiplex cinema, even when it's less than a metre away from your projection surface.

Boasting a full range of flexible wired and wireless functionality to help you connect to any audio or visual device, the H7550ST backs up its crystal clear image projected by a 3000 Lumen lamp with an onboard 10W speaker, meaning you don't even need an external speaker to get that cinematic sound experience. Whether it's gaming, sport, cinema or a TV binge you want, the H7550ST can give you a huge screen and booming sound even if you don't have a lot of space to project in.

Acer S1283Hne, 3100 Lumens Ultra Short Throw DLP Projector

This Ultra Short throw DLP projector can project a 79 inch image onto a wall at only 1m away. With this capability you can have a large cinema experience without sacrificing on space or installation.

Your Acer S1283Whne projector doesn't have to mounted or suspended from the ceiling behind your sofa to produce a large image, that table usually reserved for the TV can function as the ideal stand for this ultra short throw projector.

Ultra Short Throw (UST) Update (September 2018). There has been a growth in the ultra short throw market with many customers trying to find a home cinema product with very high lumens that can be put 6 inches away from the wall to provide a 100" screen. This has meant a surge in resellers and chinese suppliers claiming their products are ultra short throw and high brightness when often they are not even short throw nevermind ultra short throw and the brightness claims are ludicrous.

Examples of fake ultra short throw projector descriptions include Wemax one by Xiaomi claiming a whopping lie of 7000 ansi lumens for only £1500. The give away that Wemax One by Xiaomi is a FAKE product is firstly the price point is way too low, especially for a laser projector. For example by comparison a 5000 lumen projector by Casio is almost £6000 so a genuine 7000  ansi lumen model would be a significantly higher price if it were genuine. The actual brightness of the Wemax One by Xiaomi projector could be as low as 1000 to 1500 ansi lumens but is expensive for its brightness levels simply because laser components are much more expensive than their LED counterparts

Secondly, the giveaway that Wemax One is a fake description is when you see actual video footage of it at 7000 lumens the Wemax should be jumping off the walls in broad daylight with brightness when in ultra short throw but its a dull image as can be seen below. The (fake) brighter images displayed are always stills that are photoshopped so always try and look for a video of the product (often on the product pages themselves under the still images).

Wemax One Claiming 7000 Ansi Lumens Laser VERSUS a Vivitek DW763Z Laser 4000 lumen UST

On paper, the Vivitek (2nd image) is stated at almost half the brightness at 4000 lumens of the Wemax One (7000 lumens) yet these images below showing both projectors in action (not photoshopped) show the Wemax is a fraction of the actual brightness of the Vivitek DW763Z-ust yet Wemax claims to be almost twice the brightness of the Vivitek projector. The Benq W1600UST is also worth looking at for a genuine low cost high brightness (3,300 ansi lumen) UST projector.

  • Best Portable Cinema Setup to Watch the Lions Rugby 2017

    UPDATE: 4th December 2017

The Philips Screeneo 2 (HDP2510) is out of stock across UK & Europe until 2018. If you would like to consider other alternatives to the Philips Screeneo 2.0 HDP2510 please see this article

If you're planning on watching the Lions tour then why not get closer to the action with these two great portable home cinema setups that can be moved anywhere you like, even the garden.

If you're looking for great sound, impressive visuals and an enormous size image with a simple setup then take a look at the Philips Screeneo 2 and the new Pico Genie M550 Plus with Android 4.4.4.

This season the Lions matches are only broadcast on Sky Sports rather than terrestrial TV so you can use SkyGo anywhere or hookup to your skybox via HDMI. To find out more about the wired or wireless options see below and the best option to watch the Lions Tour on the big screen from June 3rd to 8th July.

Great sound is important for the match too and so the built in 26w speakers of the Philips Screeneo 2 are as good as it gets and even rival a set of Bose Home cinema speakers so they really make you feel like you are actually at the game.

Alternatively you can listen on the radio via talksport or connect the even more portable Pico Genie M550 Plus to external speakers via bluetooth to get great sound mixed with that huge screen.

Connect your Tablet, Phone or Laptop to the Projector with SkyGo

    Wired Connections

There are multiple options for connecting Sky or Skygo to the projector from your laptop including via HDMI (newer laptops), VGA (older laptops) and even AV (RCA red, white, yellow) connections. Ideally for the best image quality its best to connect via HDMI

    1. Login to www.skygo.com on your laptop
    2. Connect your laptop to the projector (HDMI, VGA, AV cables)
    3. Select the input source on the projector (some projectors do this automatically eg Pico Genie P100)
    4. Change the output mode on your laptop to output via HDMI (also automatic on some projectors)

Tip: Connect to a surround sound system to enjoy TV and movies in true cinematic style. Connect directly from the projector with a 3.5mm AUX cable or connect via your laptop (wired or wirelessly).

    SkyGo Wireless options

Unfortunately Sky have blocked wireless connectivity via portable devices such as DLNA, miracast and we’ve even heard Apple TV has problems with wireless connection in this way so the only real stable option is to connect via HDMI, VGA or AV.
