  • Acer 4K Projector Price drops

A 4k home cinema projector experience is now cheaper than ever, thanks to price reductions on the Acer 4k range.

    The Entry Level: awesome affordability

Starting at £1499.99 the Acer M550 offers an affordable cinematic experience, with luxurious visuals and near silent operation you can truly bring Cineworld to your living room.

4k Projectors for home cinemas or exhibits can often seem out of reach for many home and business owners but the truth is cheap 4K is coming sooner than you think. With the growth of 4k content and 4k specific channels  it is easier than ever to experience the breathtaking visuals on offer. If you're wondering, "why shouldn't I just go for a 4k TV?" then we suggest think bigger, if you're spending the money why not go for something that can deliver a more immersive experience at over 150"?

The Mid Range: award winning visuals for less

You can now get award winning visuals for less with the Acer V7850 4K UHD projector. Having already claimed a home cinema choice award thanks to it's rich and deep colours the V7850 is now available for only £1999.99. Such a reduction on a projector described by T3 as  "remarkable" and "easy to live with" makes this 4K UHD projector a very attractive choice for your home cinema or venue.

You can still get the cinematic experience in high light environments with the Acer H7850, offering an impressive 3000 ansi lumens (what are those?) at the full 4K resolution to future proof your purchase.

The High End: a visual revolution

And for the true colour purists, the Acer V9800 4k UHD projector is also reduced, offering that staggering 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio on an award winning projector for £3299.99. Cinematic moments are the speciality of the Acer V9800 delivering dazzling lighting and decadent colours while keeping minute details gritty and realistic.

  • Acer VL7860 vs Optoma UHZ65 4K Laser Projector Review

A Home Cinema Projector to rival your local Cineworld is now well within reach for many, thanks to host of 4k projectors, but if you want to maximise your viewing time without maintenance then 4k laser projectors offer an ideal solution. The Acer VL7860 and the New Optoma UHZ65 both offer indulgent and rich 4K viewing at sizes traditional TVs just can't handle, but which is better?

    Why laser?

By using a laser light source instead of traditional lamp-based technology both projectors offer a 20,000 hour life span, the Acer VL7860 projector can extend this to 30,000 hours with it's eco-mode. That kind of life span is enough to watch the entire marvel movie cinematic universe (with added TV episodes) 125 times continuously!  Having an eco mode is also especially important to consider when using the 4k UHD projector for long periods, meaning a lower cost of ownership in the long term.

    Brightness and Image Quality

Both the 4K Home Cinema Projectors deliver 3000 Ansi Lumens of brightness, in real terms that is enough to create a sharp image at all hours of the day. If you're finding the lumens ratings a bit tricky to handle check out this lumens guide. As the Optoma UHZ65 is also designed for business and education sectors it also offers a staggering 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio for crystal clear details even at massive signage sizes, ideal for exhibitions or museums.

A common misconception when dealing with projectors comes from their perceived inability to handle high frame rates and heavy action scenes. Both of these 4K UHD Projectors have their own ways to project at the movie standard of 24 frames per second, with PureMotion/AccuMotion technology built in to handle fast moving scenes or gaming.

Laser technology provides accurate, true to life colour reproduction with the Optoma UHZ65 delivering 80% of DCI-P3 coverage- basically meaning it can produce a wide and diverse range of Ultra HD colours.

Installation and creating your own 4K Home Cinema.

Both Projectors offer a vertical lens shift of 15% so you can ceiling mount them without fear of losing that cinema feeling with a skewed image. Despite this handy feature, 4k home cinema is more than just a projector. If you do want to create your own 4K Home Cinema you'll need more pieces than just the projector, read our 4k home cinema set up guide.

    Affordability

Here comes the clincher, the Optoma UHZ65 may be delivering a marginally sharper image but priced at £4999.99 can it really compete with the Acer VL7860's  price point of £3499.99?

The Optoma UHZ65 may have a sharper image but at over £1000 more that's what you would expect.  Offering a lower cost of ownership and a lower initial cost the Acer VL7680 has affordability covered in this high-end category.

    So what's the verdict?

If you're looking for a truly mesmerising 4k UHD Projector experience and have the extra cash to spend the Optoma UHZ65 seems to fit the bill. For those looking for a comparable, hassle free, immersive experience without the price tag the Acer VL7860 is ideal.

    Key Comparisons

The Acer M550 projector is an excellent entry level 4k choice, only 100 lumens behind its mid range cousin the Acer H7850 which also offers an affordable cinematic experience. Both offer vertical lens shift for improved adjustability.

The Acer V7850 is what many consider the colour purist model due to its RGBRGB colour wheel. If you want life-like immersion, the fantastic colour reproductions of the V7850 are award winning. The V7850 has won awards in the press with Home Cinema Choice and T3, proving itself a market leader in the 4k projector high end range.

At the Pro level the Acer V9800 produces similarly stunning visuals to the H7850 but has more image positioning options, allowing for more precisely adjusted home cinema. Uniquely this model also is one of the projectors to offer the rare horizontal lens shift as well as vertical lens shift so you can place the projector on the ceiling or in the corner of the room with little or no skewing of the image horizontally or vertically.

    Some key technologies explained:

    4K UHD

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) definition of 4K Ultra HD (UHD, 3,840 x 2,160) states the display resolution must have at least 8 million active pixels. Acer4K Ultra HD resolution with TI XPR technology serves more than 8.3 million on-screen pixels —four times more of a Full HD. All details come alive.

    HDR compatible

HDR (High dynamic range) is a technique to reproduce a greater dynamic range of luminosity. It preserves details in the darkest & brightest areas, and presents a similar range of luminance that the colour is close to how we see in real life. The expanded contrast & wider range of brightness produces true-to-life colour. Image comes to life with HDR compatible.

     Rec. 2020 compatible

Rec. 2020, also known as BT. 2020, is the recommendation for UHDTV defined by International Telecommunications Union (ITU). With Rec. 2020 compatible, projector is able to read and translate rec. 2020 language into rec. 709 for superior colour reproduction.

    Rec. 709

Rec. 709 is a standard of HDTV. It is also the colour standard that movie direct or adopted for post-production. Thanks to the inclusion of Rec 709, Acer’s projector is able to reproduce faithfully the original colours and tones to give viewers an authentic movie-watching experience. Recreate colours exactly as they’ve been imagined by the director.

    HDCP 2.2

HDCP 2.2 is the specification required for HDMI ports to play full 4K video. If your HDMI port is older than V2 then you will need to check how well 4K video displays depending on your HDMI version. All the Acer projectors above have one HDMI 2.0 port which is HDCP 2.2 enabled for your 4K content.

    The Verdict

There is now something for everyone in the Acer 4k home cinema range whether you are on a budget or looking for the best contrast ratio/features money can buy.

The award winning V7850 is also a great high end choice at a good price whilst the entry level Acer M550 and the H7850 models offer amazing value for a 4k projector.

  • NEW: World's First DLP 4K Projector, Acer V9800

4K has been threatening to become the next big thing in the consumer AV world for some time now, however 4K projectors have always been too big, too complex and most of all too expensive to make much of an impact in the world of consumer electronics.

Thanks to Acer, that is thankfully no longer the case! In creating the first DLP 4K projector, the V9800, the electronics giant has made an effort to bring 4K projection down to an affordable price. With the V9800 being under £4,000 on Personal Projector, it's a fraction of the cost of other 4K projectors on the market which can easily set you back an eye-watering £45,000. That's a quite remarkable difference in price, but how does the performance measure up?

In a word: great! The Acer V9800 makes use of a single DLP chip, which, for the videophiles out there, means there won't be any issues regarding misaligned panels which can affect the image quality. This means you'll get "ruthless clarity" and "blade-like detail" (Home Cinema Choice Magazine, May 2017 issue) in every frame. What's more, it's HDR10 compatible, offering high image clarity with "HDR performance that is genuinely surprising for a projector" (HCC Magazine).

Make no mistake, the Acer V9800 is a big unit that requires a proper install, but once that's done you'll be able to witness the full power of 4K projection, complete with vibrant colours, deep blacks and unparalleled detail. If you've been looking to set up the ultimate home cinema system, look no further than the Acer V9800!
