  • ‘Open up your iPhone…’ – now including iPhone4

Please note, the Adapt 450/Pro is now only available in Harrod's. However, we do have an exciting range of other Palm Projectors, including the XGA M100 model - now available from our online store!

Last month, we looked at how you can 'open up your iPhone with the Adapt 450' using a solution recommended by crowdedbrain.co.uk. The 'Jailbreak' suggested allows you to project from your iPhone - an ideal portable solution for presentations. Here's a recap:

Crowded Brain recommend ‘Jailbreaking’ your device, for those users still on iOS 4.0.1 or lower. You can just head over to jailbreakme.com on your device and follow the instructions. After this you can install a small app called ‘TVOutTuner’ and abracadabra you’re away!

Brett over at Crowded Brain has now found a solution for the iPhone 4:

You can now Jailbreak iOS 4.1 with Limera1n.

With the above installed you can truly open up your iPhone/iPod Touch by displaying any screen from your operating system, for example a word document (using Documents To Go) or playing a game.

Excellent news! Read the original blog here.

  • 'Open up' your iPhone with the Adapt 450

Crowded Brain recently gave an extensive review of the Adapt 450 Pro Projector, which received a ‘Recommended’ Award. The Tech Reviews/News website concluded that the 450 is a ‘a really nifty portable projector’. In addition to the review, Crowded Brain offered some top tips about using the personal projector with the iPhone and iPod Touch:

“When we spoke to Personal Projector a short while ago they also lent us an iPhone/iPod Touch TV-out cable. We then got talking about how useful such a cable would be, given that Apple restricts the output to iPod functionality only, thus leaving the rest of the phone unusable when displaying content such as word docs... With the iPhone Jailbreaked and the small projector in place, they both make an ideal portable solution for presentations!”

What’s a 'jailbreak' you may ask?

"A jailbreak is simply the ability to run apps and use themes and tweaks not approved by Apple. Jailbreaking doesn't slow down your device or use any extra battery. A jailbreak lets your device be how you want it" (jailbreakme.com)

Crowded Brain recommend ‘Jailbreaking’ your device, for those users still on iOS 4.0.1 or lower. You can just head over to jailbreakme.com on your device and follow the instructions. After this you can install a small app called ‘TVOutTuner’ and abracadabra you're away!

Crowded Brain’s suggested solution means you can ‘truly open up’ your iPhone or iPod Touch, now able to display any screen from your operating system...a word document...Angry Birds...whatever you need or fancy. This yet again demonstrates the 450’s appeal for both business and pleasure.

It's also worth noting the benefits of all of the projectors:-

    - Fast boot. Switch projector on or off in less than 5 secs without risking bulb damage

    - Can Pass through a TV out: act as a pass through system for any electronic device with a video out or TV out (RCA yellow cables) which means you can project from portable DVD players, games consoles, mobile phones etc

    - Are Environmentally friendly: are far greener than older projectors with no need to replace expensive mercury bulbs, and have less power comsumption

    - Have lower total cost of ownership than older projectors as bulbs last significantly longer, with no need to worry about filters or dust.

    - Have a 1-2 hour battery life - great for when there is a powercut or no plug/powersource and means you don't have wires everywhere

    - Improve heath and safety by not having to carry around a heavy laptop and projector, and choose one lightweight unit instead.

    - Increase sharing of content (how many times have you listened to someone go through a presentation and just seen the back of the laptop/ mobile)

Ultimately, all the products are incredible advances in micro projection and will help deliver the wow factor to whoever uses/sees them. Overall, the final choice of which pocket projector to buy has come down to:

    - If you're a business user often working heavily with PowerPoint and prefer to carry a laptop around then most users will need the 3m micro projector, it includes a handy zoom feature. However those who can't predict their lighting conditions might benefit from the extra brightness of the  Adapt 305 and be content with saving powerpoint files as jpg directly from ppt.

    - If you're either a consumer or business user wishing to "Project and
Go" just about anywhere and do impromptu presentations, watch a video or playback photos then most users will prefer the Adapt 305. It can fit into your pocket, and with 4gb of onboard memory you won't need to carry around a laptop.

    - Users who need extra brightness than a pocket projector but dont want to carry around a heavy traditional bulb projector would would like the Adapt 450 Pro/Adapt 450 palm projector as it has a much larger screen size (150 inches) and includes 2x 2w speakers and offers the best connectivity options of any projector on the market. You also have the added benefit of Digital TV anywhere (Adapt 450 Pro)

  • New breed of mini LED projectors create best value for schools

Schools are starting to see the benefits of using pico and palm projectors as a means of saving money and space. This new trend has become a great way to engage pupils visually in all areas of the school and not just with a fixed overhead projector. The projectors give the flexibility to project onto any surface (or even each other) as a creative and engaging way for pupils to learn. As proven by one school, who has used the projector at a zoo to morph people into chimpanzees.

There are some clear benefits for teachers, as this new range of projectors takes up less space and doesn't need to be professionally installed. Moreover, these micro projectors are more environmentally friendly (with no mercury and low power consumption) and can save thousands of pounds on running costs over the average life of a projector as they require no expensive lamp replacements.

A main interest comes from the number of new features which are being added to the mini LED projector's. In addition to the increase in brightness and decrease in size, projectors are being released with features such as in built Digital TV. The new Adapt 450 Pro has 100 lumens of brightness, 1.5 hour battery, USB and SD card slot. Teachers can connect via these simple external devices to transfer hassle free into teaching to minimise disruption.

The new range of LED projectors were displayed at the TES Education Show 2010 in Manchester and have impressed the education community with amazing connectivity, portability, size and price. Clare Kelly, the Assistant Head at Dane Royd J&I, Wakefield, is a regular user of this new technology. "Last week the children were creating animations using digital cameras and were able to share them easily with the handheld projectors." She says. "Children like immediate results and being able to show off their work to others. In this lesson, memory cards containing the animations were quickly transferred from the cameras to the pocket projectors. This meant children could easily share their work with the group or the whole class by projecting it onto tabletops, walls and even the ceiling. It's an approach that has certainly improved speaking and listening, and the children's presenting skills."

The move over to LED will certainly increase over the next year as the LED revolution takes hold and schools search for best value as well as great features. There is a whole range of LED projectors available ranging from something that fits in the pocket such as theAdapt 305, the worlds brightest pocket projector, to mid range projectors suitable for presenting to the entire classroom or Casio projectors which are perfect for the school hall or connecting to smartboards.
