  • How to Project Slideshows or Digital Signage at an Event

In one of our previous blogs we mentioned that we attended the Woolley Beer Festival where we used the Pico Genie M550 Plus and digital signage software to show off all the sponsors messages, event images and more. (Click here to see the blog).

In this blog we will be helping you set up your Android projector to create a presentation remotely via a digital signage application. We'll also look at how to do this without wi-fi in case you are in the middle of nowhere like we were.

Digital Signage Player Software is essentially a media player which can be controlled through an editor and allows you to add images, videos,  powerpoints, live feeds, change the screen layout and more. You can see this software used on many screens places such as bars, hotels, restaurants and airports.

You can also add content while you are at the event and take photos of the event like we did here with the band playing and then project it onto the tent walls. So we had our basic sponsor messages and then we added live info such as photos and other content throughout the show.

After looking at many options for digital signage software we found a great solution called onsign.tv that works well with the Pico Genie M550 Plus  although it should work on most Android projectors.  It also has a 14 day free trial account!

Best Digital Signage App for Android projectors

You can download the Onsign app which acts a receiver of the content you have created on your laptop. The content is streamed from the onsign website to the projector so you can remotely display whatever you desire on the projector. You can also try Screen Cloud app.

    Image result for onsign tv

If are projecting at an event and you don’t have access to Wi-Fi or a computer to access onsign.tv, there are workarounds that allow you to still be able to display your messages on a large projector screen.

Creating Digital Signage or Slideshows if if there is no wifi

A very simple solution to this is to use an SD card, USB or directly connect a mobile device or laptop to the projector (by wire or direct wireless connection for Android or Apple). Then goto the Gallery option which is already installed on the projector. To do this you can follow these steps:

    • If using powerpoint save all the slides from your slideshow as Jpeg files and put them in a folder beforehand, name these according to which ones you would like to show first e.g A Slide 1 and A Slide 2 (put A before as it will out them to the top of the list).
    • Copy onto SD, USB and the projector will recognise it for instant playback
    • Click on the album, click the 3 buttons in the top right corner and click slideshow.

Using this method is very simple and effective however you cannot change how long the images are shown.

    Changing the slide show timings

A better solution which allows you to have more control is to use an app called Random Slideshow (please don’t be discouraged by the name, you can set it so the images are sequential instead of random).  To do this you can follow these steps:

    • Download the app Random Slideshow.
    • Save all the slides from your slideshow as Jpeg files and put them in a folder beforehand, name these according to which ones you would like to show first e.g A Slide 1 and A Slide 2 (put A before as it will out them to the top of the list).
    • Copy onto SD, USB and the projector will recognise it for instant playback
    • Go into the Random Slideshow App, select the album you want to use "with this app you are also able to use multiple albums from different sources such as USB, SD or the projectors own internal memory and have it go through them all"
    • Scroll further down before clicking start slideshow to change the time length of each image and to turn the randomising off

Live Feeds from Social Media (Twitter, Facebook)

One great option you can use at a party or any event is social media pages. Simply access a browser such as Chrome on the projector and logon to your twitter page. This then displays all tweets displayed so if you ask everyone at the show via the projector to use your # or @ then you can see a live feed of everyone's comments, feedback and photos as the show rolls on. It can be a really powerful tool.

  • Maximise Your Event! Project Anywhere

Recently we attended the Woolley Beer Festival and we brought along the Pico Genie M550 Plus with us as it is ultra portable and lightweight, has android built in with IOS Screen mirroring and has USB and SD card slots for easy transfer of photos from cameras and laptops.

Its also got a decent enough brightness of 650 ansi lumens and many more features such as android and internet onboard which worked well at this type of festival event in a remote location and with the event being in the middle of the field it really shows that you can project anywhere you want.Pico Genie M550 Plus Being used at a festival

If you do not have access to power, do not worry, the projector has a powerful in built battery and with it being installation free you can virtually place the projector wherever you want!

As you can see from the images above we used a tripod to project our images on to the wall and ceiling of the marquee. However you can also mount the projector on to the frame of the marquee and have it out of the way and because of the battery you would not have to worry about cables hanging everywhere.

A gorrilla mount with a standard tripod thread would do the job and tha battery will last 2 to 3 hours. Having said that its always better to power it where you can as its slightly brighter when its on mains rather than eco mode but this can be changed.

We projected screen sizes of up to 1.5 metres diagonal at this even but it could go as large as 3m wide or a 200" image (at night).

While at the event a wide range of people could connect to the projector for example...

    • The event photographer was able to use their SD Card and move the images onto the projectors hard drive using an app called “File Manager”. This allowed him to showcase the images on the projector and continue to use his SD Card.
    • The Sponsors were able to put their messages through a PowerPoint onto the built-in memory of the projector using a USB.
    • The Producers could have even used a live twitter feed for others that attended the event to share content of the event which was then projected as well as getting more content online at the same time

There are many connectivity options for the Pico Genie M550 Plus such as VGA, HDMI, SD, USB and Wireless Mirroring for IOS and Android.

The Pico Genie M550 Plus really is a great all- rounder projector to use for events, festivals and more.

  • The Wireless Projection Guide- What Are the Options And How Does It Work?

Fed up of cables? Need more information about wireless projection? We'll explain the different wireless options along with the best and easiest way to connect your smart device at 100" seamlessly.

Whether it's for home use, travel, business, education, gaming, entertainment or art, projecting your smart device wirelessly can make life a whole lot easier, see our full range of wireless projectors here.

How does Full Wireless Mirroring work with a projector?

This term is fairly self-explanatory and means your smart device (iPhone/Android Phone/Tablet etc) display can be fully mirrored through the projector wirelessly. Whatever is displayed through your device will be identical through the projector so what you see on one screen is what you get on the other screen.

Apple call this AirPlay and Android call it Screen Mirroring / Quick Connect (amongst other terms). Some projectors have this function built in like the Pico Genie and Qumi ranges. Other projectors don't have this functionality, however a variety of dongles can be purchased to enable this feature.

     Wireless M550

How does wireless mirroring work with a projector using an App?

On either Android or iPhone you can download free Apps like Mira Cast and connect your smart device to the projector directly. Note: You will need to have the projector and your mobile device connected to the same Wi-Fi network in order for this to work.

With your mobile device screen mirrored to your projector you can pretty much access everything from email, videos, the web, PowerPoint, music and much more. A great way to play your favourite mobile games full screen or for easy scrolling of your social medias.

    p85 ez cast

What are the alternatives if my projector doesn't have built-in wireless?

If your projector doesn't have wirelessly functionality built in, don't worry. You still have options to share your smart device wirelessly. There are a wide variety of methods of mirroring whether its using a cable or a wireless HDMI type dongle or system like Apple TV or Chromecast.

Cables - The simplest and easiest way will be using a cable. For Android users this may include an MHL adaptor which must be purchased for the exact model of your handset so its advisable to purchase it from the manufacturer directly. For Apple users there are a variety of HDMI and VGA adaptors that connect HDMI or VGA cables directly to a iPhone or an iPad. There are lots of copies on the market for this type of cable so beware of cheap imitations. See Apple’s website for more details.

Wireless dongles can be connected via USB or HDMI ports. This will allow your smart device to connect straight to the projector wirelessly. Using a wireless dongle is a great way for you to add wireless mirroring features to your current projector.

Not all of the available dongles will work in the dame way. Some will come with both a transmitter and receiver and will need to be set up accordingly while others will need to connect to your Wi-Fi and transmit via your internet connection. Before purchasing a dongle it is best to check what devices you want to use it with, you can see our full range of wireless dongles here.

  • Buying Projectors on Amazon: Buyer Beware of Top 10 Chinese Fakes

Many of our customers have been asking us how is it possible that projectors listed on Amazon's Prime Deals or on Amazons Top 15 projectors are 1000 lumens yet only cost £50.

    2 shots

We decided to investigate and have been monitoring this since September 2016. We purchased one of the Top 15 projectors on Amazon to see what was going on. We discovered a large amount of false trades descriptions which we have reported to Amazon. The list of these companies has since proliferated as Amazon allows fake reviews and people just look at the star ratings rather than the details so it always shows 4 stars or higher in the review despite alluring to the odd minor negative point in the reviews.

Unfortunately its not in Amazons interests to do anything about these fake reviews or fake products with fake lumens as they get paid for every sale whether you return it or not. Even when you return it they still take a 7% to 15% commission - so its a Win Win for Amazon and a pain for you as the customer to be duped by false trades descriptions! We reported the issue at the beginning of the year and years later later the problem still exists despite numerous complaints to Amazon.

We reviewed one of the best selling Amazon projector: Elephas Full Color 130" Portable LED "Pico" Projector. This review highlights the major flaws in all Amazon's best selling projectors and shows how many manufacturers are massively exaggerating features and specifications of these projectors. This review/guide will help you to avoid buying fake products and to understand how these companies selling on Amazon's marketplace (and even via Amazon Prime FBA) are breaching trading standards and are blatantly lying to customers.

Lumens Test: The biggest false description on Amazon

The most important test is brightness so we compared the popular Pico Genie P55 which is a genuine 50 lumens to the Elephas Full Colour 130" which is stated as "1000 lumens". The Elephas is well priced at £54 on Amazon which is impossibly cheap for a projector of "1000" lumens.

Below the image shows the brightness difference between the Pico Genie P55 (bottom image) and the Elephas (top image). If anything, the Pico Genie P55 is brighter and also has a better resolution. This is fairly shocking when you consider the Elphas is being listed as 20x brighter than the Pico Genie? Yes, 20 TIMES! Amazon’s top 15 projectors state they have 800-1500 lumens which is simply false.

    20160830_154009830_iOS

The alarm bells should initially start ringing when you see a headline figure of 1000 lumens and a price of anything less than £400.

To see what a real 1000 lumen projector looks like take a look at the Vivitek Qumi Q8  - its a world apart, its like watching a home cinema and the brightness looks like a printed graphic showing perfectly and clearly in normally lit conditions. Then take a look at a projector that does a real 500 or 650 lumens in this video and you will see instantly the difference.

Unfortunately there is no limit to how much the lumens can be overstated by. This is shown clearly by the Anker Nebula Projector.

Regularly quoted at a massive 3000 lumens online the Anker nebula actually has only 500 ansi lumens, putting it on par with the Piqs TT or the Qumi Q3. At it's rather large size not only is far from being a truly ultra portable projector, as both alternatives offer the same power from much smaller handheld devices.

Ultra Short Throw (UST) Update (September 2018). There has been a growth in the ultra short throw market with many customers trying to find a home cinema product with very high lumens that can be put 6 inches away from the wall to provide a 100" screen. This has meant a surge in resellers and chinese suppliers claiming their products are ultra short throw and high brightness when often they are not even short throw nevermind ultra short throw and the brightness claims are ludicrous.

Examples of fake ultra short throw projector descriptions include Wemax one by Xiaomi claiming a whopping lie of 7000 ansi lumens for only £1500. The give away that Wemax One by Xiaomi is a FAKE product is firstly the price point is way too low, especially for a laser projector. For example by comparison a 5000 lumen projector by Casio is almost £6000 so a genuine 7000  ansi lumen model would be a significantly higher price if it were genuine. The actual brightness of the Wemax One by Xiaomi projector could be as low as 1000 to 1500 ansi lumens but is expensive for its brightness levels simply because laser components are much more expensive than their LED counterparts

Secondly, the giveaway that Wemax One is a fake description is when you see actual video footage of it at 7000 lumens the Wemax should be jumping off the walls in broad daylight with brightness when in ultra short throw but its a dull image as can be seen below. The (fake) brighter images displayed are always stills that are photoshopped so always try and look for a video of the product (often on the product pages themselves under the still images).

Wemax One Claiming 7000 Ansi Lumens Laser VERSUS a Vivitek DW763Z Laser 4000 lumen UST

On paper, the Vivitek (2nd image) is stated at almost half the brightness at 4000 lumens of the Wemax One (7000 lumens) yet these images below showing both projectors in action (not photoshopped) show the Wemax is a fraction of the actual brightness of the Vivitek DW763Z-ust yet Wemax claims to be almost twice the brightness of the Vivitek projector. The Benq W1600UST is also worth looking at for a genuine low cost high brightness (3,300 ansi lumen) UST projector. A genuine 7000 ansi lumen projector would cost several thousand USD, Euros or pounds.

Vivitek DH765Z Ultra Short Throw High Brightness Laser Projector

Focus: Dont be limited to a fixed focus and fixed size image

The Elephas and Amazon’s top 15 projectors often will have a fixed focus meaning it has to be an EXACT distance from the wall to be able to view it otherwise its out of focus. Thus it has to be exactly 1.5m away to create an image of 50-60”. If the Elephas is moved any closer to the projection surface, it is instantly out of focus so you just cant see it.

In other words its useless if you want to put the projector anywhere other than 1.5m away from the wall.

On some of the other top 15 Amazon projectors, if you have a small projection area you could end up with a screen size that is far too big for your projection space as well as it being out of focus.

Pico Genie and other premium brand projectors can be focused as small as 15cm from the projection surface to create a tiny image or over >100" simply by moving them closer/further from the projected area.

    Check its got real DLP

DLP is a premium image chip from Texas Instruments meaning your image quality will be viewable and far superior to the chinese versions listed on Amazon. It usually also means the projector itself is much smaller as can be seen with the Elephas versus the Pico Genie above.

The costs of these DLP chips are high so as a rough guide anything advertised under £140 on Amazon is more than likely not going to have a real DLP chip inside. Its also likely to be a much larger size projector in terms of its dimensions (as can be seen in the photos above the Pico Genie is tiny in comparison to the Elephas).

    Size / Portability

The genuine Pico Genie P55 is a fraction of the size of most of the top 15 projectors listed on Amazon and is more pocketable. Also the quality is not compromised because of its size as Pico Genie projectors use DLP rather than poor quality LCOS.

As can be seen below the Elephas is almost 4x bigger than the Pico Genie.

Weight – even with a battery this product is lighter and smaller than the majority of the top 15 projectors, it’s therefore ideal for quickly moving or taking away on your travels. Unlike the Elephas that would need a larger back to be transported.

    2 shots

    Battery

All Pico Genie products include a battery as standard. The Pico Genie P55’s inbuilt battery will last for up to 2.5 hours. In comparison to Amazon’s top 15 which are 4x the size and do not have any battery at all. Pico Genie projectors are ultra portable and can be used anywhere.

    Fan Noise/usage & burning smells

The Pico Genie P55 makes very little fan noise when in use and can be used for as long as required on mains power. Amazon’s top 15 projectors such as Elephas are incredibly noisy and kick out a lot of heat. They also state they should not be used for more than 3-4 hours at any one time. This also highlights a major safety concern. We used the Elephas for around 1-2 hours and it became very hot and produced some unusual burning smells.

    Build quality

The Pico Genie P55 is built to a high quality and is highly robust. Aesthetically the P55 design is far superior to Amazon’s top 15.

    Beware Of:

Below is a list of brands overstating the trade descriptions, often quoting lumens at over 10 times higher or suggesting its Full HD or even 4k when its a much lower resolution, amongst others.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of dodgy projector brands. The same companies are using different brand names which get changed regularly to avoid detection. There are many more out there but if the number of lumens appears too high for the price then, unless its a used item, then you have to question whether it is a genuine or a fake description.

    Overstated lumens at the Higher-end

The Anker Nebula is quoted in most online specifications at a massive 3000  lumens
    • but only offers 500 ansi lumens

SUMMARY:  Tips to Avoid Buying Fake Projectors from Amazon & Online

    1. Claims its New < £80: If it's brand new and less than £80, don't bother. The projector is more than likely being way over sold by a Chinese company. LED projectors of any decent quality that are new with DLP and a minimum genuine lumens of 50 lumens start at £150 / €180 / $195
    2. Claims its New <£300 and claims over 600 lumens - it's quoting "Chinese marketing lumens" and maybe 10 or 20 times overstated and probably 50 lumens with no DLP and is fake
    3. DLP? - Ensure the projector has Texas Instruments DLP, this provides superior image quality and is the industry standard.
    4. States "use in a dark room" - If the projector has over 200 lumens and states "Use in a dark room", usually means its less than 50 lumens so avoid
    5. 1080p - this is one of the biggest lies - there are very few 1080p models out there and certainly none by any lesser known brands not listed above. The likelihood is that if you've not heard of the brand and its stating 1080p then its not 1080p. It should say "supports" 1080p ie supports Full HD but instead they just claim its Full HD when in fact its probably 2 or 3 grades down from that at VGA resolution - whats in a word eh !
    6. Catches Fire - If it says "it needs to be turned off after 2-4 hours", give it a miss. It is more than likely dangerous and prone to catching fire. It has been made very cheaply and so key safety processes can easily be missed.
    7. Common Sense - If it sounds too good to be true, it is!! Remember if you buy cheap you usually end up buying twice so just buy the product that's right for you first time around.

    CONCLUSION

The old saying, BUY CHEAP BUY TWICE is true but if you need a quality brand at an affordable price then its worth checking out projector special offers or sales here for those genuine brands.

If all of this talk of Ansi and marketing lumens have you stumped then we have got you covered, we have written a handy guide which will explain everything that you need to know here.

Now that you know what not to look for in a projector it might be handy to find out what you should be looking for, we have a great guide available for you here.

How to get results with a complaint on Amazon in the UK

We spent 14 months writing to Amazon to complain about fraudulent trades descriptions on Amazon as they continue to allow resellers, predominantly Chinese, to describe goods however they like without any resemblance to the truth. Amazon fail to do anything about it whatsoever so here are some steps you can take if you have similar problems.

    1. Try raising a case through seller central if you are a reseller or via Contact Us on Amazon as a consumer. If you get standard responses like we did for 14 months whereby its clear they are just not reading or listening to the complaint then go to step 2
    2. Report it to Trading Standards which has to be done via the Citizens Advice Bureau either by phone 03454 04 05 06 or Id recommend going to this online form at the bottom of their website. Get a case number
    3. Call the European Consumer Credit Center on 01268 886690 - Get a case number
    4. Write a letter to Amazon UK’s offices. This address is quite well hidden and hard to find so we’ve listed it below. Make sure you send it recorded delivery and inform them of the case numbers and the issues
    5. The main issue is Amazon’s HQ is outside the UK so they often like to pass the buck so the next step is to also report it to CMA - Competition & Markets Authority and this can be passed onto the equivalent trading standards bodies in the relevant countries – email for CMA general.enquiries@cma.gsi.gov.uk and again get a case number to pass onto Amazon

  • Are Nebula's portable projectors really the stars of the show?

If you're searching for a portable projector you've probably seen Nebula's latest offerings as they seek to deliver a complete cinema experience in the smallest and smartest devices possible. Those uninitiated in the projector industry are easily swept up in the sharp design of the Capsule (left) and lofty promise of home cinema on-the-go Mars (right) , but can Nebula really deliver? Compared with all-rounders like the PIQS TT, M550 PLus and Qumi Q38 are they still worthy?

    Lumens are key

Let's get right into it, lumens are one of the most crucial features on a projector and yet they are still one of the least well understood. If you'd like to find out what real ansi lumens are, have a look at our blog post that answers question "what are ansi lumens?" Essentially ansi lumens are the official measurement for brightness and are the only real way to judge how bright a projector is.

To put this in perspective the tiny Nebula Capsule has an ansi lumens rating of 100. Now this may sound small but 100 ansi lumens is still bright enough for a dark room and would be fine in a pitch black room. Here is the real issue with Nebula's Capsule  - the Capsule is also being advertised with the tag line "Transform Any Space Into a Theater" which leads most people to believe it can handle any environment. Unfortunately 100 ansi lumens is exclusively for dark environments.

Could I use it with the lights on?

If you've got a plan to buy one for your office for example, sadly this projector won't be able to handle it, as 100 ansi lumens just isn't enough for normal ambient light. We usually recommend around 450 ansi lumens upwards to handle a bright office or home environment with the lights on.

Nebula themselves do address this slightly in their description but sadly other retailers have yet to pick up on the fact that 100 ansi lumens can't create a cinema experience anywhere.

    From Nebula's page on Indiegogo:

" 5. How bright are 100 ANSI Lumens? Is it bright enough to see in normal lighting?

It can provide a clear 100 inch screen in a dim environment and support a clear 60 inch screen in an neutral lighting. "

The Nebula Mars projector has 500 ansi lumens in a lunchbox sized device, yet sadly many retailers, even PC World, have jumped on the fake lumens bandwagon. As a result the Nebula Mars is regularly quoted at a massive 3000 lumens. Nebula themselves even quote at 3000 lumens despite the nebula Mars projector only reaching a genuine 500 ansi lumens.

That's proper home cinema territory and it's not possible to get anything that bright with easy carry-able portability. When the market is saturated with fake lumens it becomes very difficult to gauge how bright something actually is.

    The Challengers

There's no doubting the sound systems and sleek designs on Nebula's products are fantastic but their lofty claims and lumens ratings simply can't be backed up. if you want genuine, have a look at these challengers:

    The Pico Genie M550 Plus

The M550 Plus projector (above) was recently voted best portable projector for 2018 and packs a host of features into a palm sized projector. At 650 genuine ansi lumens of brightness the M550 Plus projector is bright enough to handle light environments - you can find the evidence on the M550 Plus product page. With 720p, 3D capability and app store onboard it's a very capable TV / home cinema replacement and is an excellent alternative to the nebula mars.

    The QUMI Q38

The first Pico projector to offer full HD 1080p has 600 ansi lumens and a powerful android V6.0 operating system for crisp images at huge sizes. Crucially the small Qumi Q38 projector doesn't have the bulk of the Nebula Mars and is brighter, with full HD and easy Wifi streaming to boot.

    The PIQS TT

The PIQS TT projector provides an excellent alternative to both Nebula offerings, being palm sized and brighter than the Capsule with impressive 2 hour battery life and 450 ansi lumens.  You don't even have to sacrifice the app store as the PIQS TT projector can access the google play store.

That's not all though, the PIQS TT also comes with an interactive remote for easy presenting, gaming and drawing. Both Nebula offerings cover two different areas of the projector market, but why not get a home cinema and portable streaming device all in one palm sized unit?

    The Verdict

Don't settle for a niche product that can only fulfil one of the many possible uses that a projector can have, don't get drawn into the fake lumens hype, and last of all buy something genuine.

  • Alternatives to: Epson EB-S41 - Portable SVGA 3LCD Projector

The Epson EB-S41 - Portable SVGA 3LCD Projector is evidently sold as a portable lamp projector, but what are the alternatives for people that want a pocket sized powerhouse instead of another laptop box in their bag?

Epson's offering is certainly bright at a 3300 lumens (if you're not sure what this means click here) and has plenty of connectivity options, but standing on the scales at 2.3kg Epson's SVGA projector weighs as much as a standard laptop, and is chunkier to boot.

    The PIQS TT WiFi Projector

If you're looking for a projector that can handle presentations with ease the PIQS TT WiFi projector has you covered. This portable wifi projector has an interactive remote and Android onboard so you can download apps and manipulate your any on screen data with ease.

The auto keystone feature and inbuilt battery also alleviate any unnecessary set up, just pop it down, turn it on and the screen adjusts automatically to the optimal size, all without being connected to a power supply.

The Pico Genie M550 Plus Portable Projector

If space is tight and you need something bright, the Pico Genie M550 Plus portable projector is an ideal and versatile projector for business or leisure. With short throw capability this LED pico projector delivers a larger image at a smaller distance compared to standard throw models. This means you don't need as much space to create your ideal big screen experience.

With it's LED light source you wont have to worry about maintenance, unlike lamp projectors, this projector has a light source lifespan of 20,000 hours! And with android on-board you can spend those hours with whichever apps you choose!

At 650 Ansi Lumens ( what are those) the M550 Plus LED DLP projector can handle ambient light with ease, making it a viable choice for the office, but crucially you can take it anywhere with ease. Weighing in at only 890 grams even with its whopping 3 hour battery life this powerful projector is ideal for true portability, move night doesn't have to be indoors after all!

    The Qumi Q8

The Epson may have the high brightness useful for a large conference room,  but realistically the 1000 ansi lumens delivered by the Qumi Q8 portable projector are enough to cope with almost any lighting environment the portable projector will encounter. That's not all though, the Qumi Q8 DP LED Projector boasts a FULL 1080p Resolution, the smallest projector to currently offer those rich visuals!

    The Verdict

There a plenty of more portable projectors out there, the Epson may be solid choice if you don't fancy moving your projector once it's set, but if you're looking for something more versatile all the above projectors are excellent alternatives.
