One of the questions we are asked more and more at Personal Projector these days is should you buy a 4k TV or a 4k projector?
Here are a few reasons why a projector like the Chiq B5U projector still can have the advantage over buying a large TV:-
1. Image Size
The main advantage of course in viewing 4k content on a 4k projector as opposed to a 4k TV is the supersized ultra lifelike, immersive images blown up to a huge cinema size as it was intended to be ie up to 100" / 120"
Projectors are generally designed to work at much larger sizes. Indeed the B5U smallest recommended size is only 80"and goes up to 120" so far larger than any reasonably priced TV.
Once you start going over 85" on 4K high end TVs costs start to climb dramatically from £2200 for a Sony Bravia TV to around £12,000 for a 98" screen and best not to even go there for the 120" versions of these.
Also you will need to consider the cost of installation of the TV or Non UST projector which can mount up to more than the perceived savings on a TV (see below).
At 85kg (185 lbs) for an 85" TV its going to need a pretty strong wall / brackets and proper installation to ensure it doesn't drop off your wall.
The 100" ALR projection screen will however only weigh 9kgs (19lbs) and more importantly be much much thinner as it doesn't have the speakers inside it so its almost totally flush to the wall.
If buying an ALR screen then there is no issue watching the higher lumen UST models like the B5U in daylight as a few videos have shown on this forum.
5. Input lag
There have been a few people comment that they have not had any real world issues with input lag with the Chiq B5U. Whilst its not going to be as fast as the fastest gaming projectors on the market, the B5U has one of the better ones of all the UST models rather than standard models.
As you can imagine with the extra size and weight of a bigger TV it requires much more thought for installation than a UST projector that just sits on a cabinet with a lightweight screen that just simply hangs on the wall. DIY installation is far quicker and easier with a projector than a big heavy TV.
We recently did one professional large TV panel installation that took 14 hours in total to move all the cables, electrics, and networks (to ensure it was high speed) and to re-enforce the stud walls to ensure the TV and speakers could hang on the wall without falling off.
This of course is the same with a non UST projector where cables have to go into the middle of the ceiling usually, mounts installed, cables hidden and voids made to fit all the cabling followed by replastering and redocorating.
With UST you just don't get all this hassle. Its quick, simple and easy. With ALR screens, projectors are now viewable in daylight too at a much more affordable price than they ever were. You get the full immersive cinema experience that you might not get on the 85" or lower TV models so overall price and performance at a decent size is still the best option over the large TVs.

Having a big TV up to 85" is great but sometimes you want to feel like you're going to the cinema with a 100" or 150" screen.
The new breed of Ultra Short Throw projectors such as the Chiq B5U from Changhong allow you to discreetly hide away the projector up against the wall (with zero installation) but at the same time allow you to enjoy a bigger 4K cinematic experience than even the largest TV. So you can achieve almost double the normal screen size at a reasonable price (its cheaper per inch than a standard TV) at only £1899.
The CHIQ B5U is one of the most understated laser projectors with its ANSI Lumens and Contrast providing us with over double than what is stated on the specification, putting it as the best valued Home Cinema 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector on the market.
Check out these videos showing how understated the Chiq projector is and how bright it is in full daylight compared to it competitors.
The video compares the Viewsonic X10 projector in real non-photo-shopped conditions in the daylight and dark. These days its really hard to compare like with like in projectors especially in terms of lumens and general image quality without side by side comparisons like this Viewsonic X10 versus Changhon Chiq B5U.
Looking at the video it becomes clear the X10 is very overstated in terms of of lumens and contrast ratios as well as some other features. For example, the Changhong Chiq B5U shows only 1900 ansi lumens compared to 2400 on the Viewsonic X10.
Its contrast ratio shows the Viewsonic X10 at 3 million to one versus only 150k to one on the Chiq B5U. Yet when looking at the image compared side by side, the video shows the Chiq B5U has a far superior image despite on paper looking like the B5U is nowhere near as high a spec as the X10.
Its quite clear the Chiq has a far better image quality in terms of brightness and contrast / vibrancy of colour even in daylight. In fact in daylight its a superb spec thats worthy of comparable advertised lumens of 3500 - 5000 lumens such as the Optoma UHDZ65 UST.
Image Quality & Ultra Short Throw
The Chiq B5U is almost certain to give the WOW factor every time it is turned on with its gorgeous 4K Ultra HD Resolution.
The B5Us Ultra Short Throw feature projects a MASSIVE screen size of up to 150” (bigger than any 4K TV) from just inches away from the wall, making it much simply and cheaper to install and hide away in a cabinet up against the wall.
Images project in most lighting conditions and can achieve bright and clear images with the projectors high brightness of 1900 ANSI Lumens and contrast ratio of 15000:1. Also with the pure laser light source and wide colour gamut of ≥130% you can be guaranteed true and natural colours.
B5U also features an Eye Protection function to avoid accidental damages to your eyes. With its built-in sensor, when someone gets too close to the lens, the projector will shut down the light source temporarily (5 seconds) to avoid eye damage.
Get the best gaming experience when playing the latest titles such as Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare with the B5Us low input lag of around 45ms. See the CHiQ B5U in action playing fast motioned games such as: Formula 1, Street Fighter and Spiderman
Be able to project in almost any lighting condition with an Ambient Light Rejection Screen and achieve bright and clear images with the projectors high brightness and understated 1900 ANSI Lumens and contrast ratio of 15000:1. With the pure laser light source and wide colour gamut of ≥130% you can be guaranteed true and natural colours.
Whilst most home cinema afficionado's will connect external speakers to their projector, the Chiq B5U does actually have a better internal sound system than most projectors with its two 10 watt speakers built in.
You can easily connect to external speakers via Bluetooth.
Low noise is key for any projector and this one comes in at a relatively quite 30db helped by the laser light source which generally uses less power than a lamp projector.
The B5U offers full range of connection ports including Ethernet, coaxial output, audio output, VGA audio Input, VGA input, 2 x USB 2.0, 2 x HDMI 2.0, built-in WiFi (5GHz/2.4GHz Dual Band) and built-in Bluetooth 5.0.

Warranty & Lamp Life: Hassle Free
It can be a worry when purchasing a new brand that you may not have heard of previously so its good to know that Changhong has been one of the top 3 brands of high quality TVs (and now projectors) and is a household name to millions across Asia.
As a lamp-free laser projector, the B5U offers over 25,000 hours maintenance free lifespan.
To back up the quality of the projectors, all Changhong projectors include a 2 year UK warranty as standard and a 5 year right to repair. The latter ensures spare parts are guaranteed to be kept for 5 years so it can always be repaired within that time.
In addition, this is serviced in the UK so there is none of the usual hassle of returning goods to China, paying huge postage costs or arguing with Chinese sellers over warranties.
Projection Distance & Smaller TV Cabinet
The Chiq B5U is one of the shortest ultra short throw (UST) projectors on the market with 0.21 to 1 throw ratio instead of the usual 0.25 to 1.
This shorter throw actually makes a big difference since the B5U projector requires the shortest distance to project the biggest screen eg B5U only requires 19.5cm for a 100" screen !
This has the advantage of not requiring a large or specially made TV cabinet/table with a larger depth for the projector. Other UST projectors with longer throw ratio >0.21:1 may need at least 40cm distance to project 100" screen, plus the depth of the projector itself requiring a a TV cabinet with the depth of at least 90cm which most TV cabinets/tables do not offer.
However, it also means you need a perfect flat wall or a flat projector screen to project the image, any slight curves on the wall will cause distortion as you currently got.
Like most UST projectors, the Chiq B5U does not support keystone adjustment for a few very good reasons.
No Keystone means improved image
Keystone is managed by digitally altering or cutting a projected image. This creates a lower image resolution, leaves the altered part of the image slightly out of focus and creates grey shadows around the cut images. When this is magnified to large sizes and in 4k the image quality reduction is highly noticeable so its better to not have keystone.
Manual Correction is better for UST projectors
As the distance between the projector and the wall/screen is so short you can more easily manually adjust keystone by adjusting the kickstand screws underneath the projector so a manual operation keeps the lens focus sharp.
Uneven Walls are not cured with Keystone
If your wall is uneven, no end of keystone correction will assist it. Keystone adjustment will only adjust certain points in most of the cases, just the four or eight points of the image rather than iron out the multiple uneven points on most walls.
Hence the best option is always a tensioned or preferably fixed frame Ultra Short Throw Screen. If you’re on a budget then buy some rigid white MDF and mount onto that and cut it to size.
Content: Amazon Fire Stick included
Stream all your favourite movies/videos on your preferred streaming app straight from the projector with the Amazon Fire stick included with B5U.
The ChangHong Chiq B5U has a wide range of features, connectivity and inbuilt TV content and is a perfect 4K projector for anyone looking to enhance their living space and enjoy a true cinematic experience at a very reasonable price .

The X10 is now commercially available after it was launched at ISE 2019 whilst the X100 and X1000 UST models are due in March.

Visitor attractions have long benefited from impressive projections like the ones you see below in the Portuguse catacoombs. What made this particular installation interesting was its use of the new FujiFilm Z5000 Projector with its flexible rotating lens and impressive lens shifts which resulted in large savings in terms of time to install and the cost of installation.
For example, the flexibility of the Fuji Z5000 lens meant instead of 100 standard projectors they required only 35 Fuji projectors plus 10 standard projectors. The Fuji projector adapts extremely well in any space with its unique twistable lens arrangement. Coupled with its market leading horizontal and vertical lens shift it means its also cheaper and easier to install.
In addition, the Z5000s projection mapping feature helps project more easily onto curved and difficult surfaces. As the video below demonstrates, the Fuji projector’s built in edge blending software creates impressive large moving visuals covering the large areas of the catacombs.
Moreover, projector positioning is much simpler with the Fuji’s unique twistable lens and wide range of lens shift options ensuring the projector itself could be positioned out of the way of the audience while still creating magnificent results at the visitor attraction.

Philips' Screeneo 2.0 is out of stock across UK & Europe due to 2 collapses of the company that held the license for this product. As of September 2018 there are no active UK distributors of Screeneo so if you are looking for some good alternatives here are some options!
The Vivitek DH765Z-UST laser projector with zero bulb replacements / maintenance and the stunning Benq W1600UST home cinema projector. Also watch out for an increase in fake chinese products where the descriptions and lumens are ludicrously exaggerated by over 10 times such as the Wemax One by Xiaomi.
The Vivitek DH765Z-UST is one of the closest alternatives to the Philips Screeneo 2 but works better for those wanting a much brighter image in a normally lit room. The Vivitek projector has 4000 lumens so is double the 2000 lumens of brightness on the Screeneo which is a major benefit if you want to use it in your lounge to replace your normal TV and not have to draw the curtains.
The other advantage of the Vivitek DH765Z is that its a laser projector with no lamp so it means you will not incur expensive bulb cost replacements with over 30,000 hour "lamp" life instead of just 6,000 hr lamp life. So although the Vivitek DH765Z-UST is more expensive than the Screeneo 2 HDP2510 there will be significantly lower running costs on the Vivitek laser projector which makes up for the added extra cost.
The Vivitek is also ultra short throw and as you can see in the image you can put this right up against the wall and project an absolutely huge image 3 or 4 times the size of your TV.
Whilst its speaker system is only 10 watt speakers compared to the Screeneo's 26w you can of course connect an external audio system too. The smaller speakers also has the added benefit of making the Vivitek projector smaller and lighter taking up less space.
The Vivitel DH765Z-UST was not originally designed for home cinema enthusiasts, so without those high contrast ratios and deep blacks it may not sport the exact same image quality as the Screeneo. Also without AcuMotion, or frame interpolation technology, sports and high speed scenes may be harder to view. However, the Vivitek projector will be well suited to those wanting a brighter ultra short throw image with lower running costs in a smaller unit than the Screeneo 2. You won't find a maintenance free projector at a staggering 4000 lumens anywhere else without paying upwards of £10,000!
Place this stylish projector just inches from the wall and you'll get the full HD 1080p cinematic experience without any installation costs! The BenQ W1600UST also offers a staggering 3300 ansi lumens of brightness so you can keep that quality crisp and bright in every home lighting environment.
The award-winning Acer V7500 is near the top of the tree this Christmas! Boasting an incredible 2500 Lumen lightshow to back up its revolutionary software and sophisticated colour technology, it's no surprise it comes recommended by Home Cinema Choice magazine.
Inside its trendy white exterior is a range of seriously impressive features, including an Ambient Light Sensor to automatically adjust the image to suit the brightness of your surroundings, 4 Corner keystone correction and RGBRGB colour wheel for vivid colours. It also boasts a whopping 20,000:1 contrast ratio, meaning its picture quality is hard to beat, whether you're watching a film in a darkened room or sport on a bright Saturday afternoon. It isn't short throw, but it does have a massive max image size of 300", over twice the size of the Screeneo for less than half the cost! If you wanted a Screeneo for home cinema or sport, the V7500 has you covered!
A mighty short throw projector that can project a huge screen just a metre from your projection surface, the H6517ST might not be the most snappily-titled projector, but it's ideal for cinema, gaming and more!
At 3000 Lumens, it can project a crystal clear image in even bright sunlight, meaning you can get Full HD in a billion colours and flicker-free 3D at 300 inches diagonally. It has a range of automatic and manual image adjustment controls so it's a doddle to set up and get that big-screen feeling from the comfort of your living room. If you're looking for a projector that can produce a massive, clear image even in the most cramped Christmas living room, you might want to put the H6517ST on your Christmas list.
Packing a heavyweight punch in a lightweight frame, the H7550ST is a short throw projector with the power to turn your front room into a multiplex cinema, even when it's less than a metre away from your projection surface.
Boasting a full range of flexible wired and wireless functionality to help you connect to any audio or visual device, the H7550ST backs up its crystal clear image projected by a 3000 Lumen lamp with an onboard 10W speaker, meaning you don't even need an external speaker to get that cinematic sound experience. Whether it's gaming, sport, cinema or a TV binge you want, the H7550ST can give you a huge screen and booming sound even if you don't have a lot of space to project in.
This Ultra Short throw DLP projector can project a 79 inch image onto a wall at only 1m away. With this capability you can have a large cinema experience without sacrificing on space or installation.
Your Acer S1283Whne projector doesn't have to mounted or suspended from the ceiling behind your sofa to produce a large image, that table usually reserved for the TV can function as the ideal stand for this ultra short throw projector.

Ultra Short Throw (UST) Update (September 2018). There has been a growth in the ultra short throw market with many customers trying to find a home cinema product with very high lumens that can be put 6 inches away from the wall to provide a 100" screen. This has meant a surge in resellers and chinese suppliers claiming their products are ultra short throw and high brightness when often they are not even short throw nevermind ultra short throw and the brightness claims are ludicrous.
Examples of fake ultra short throw projector descriptions include Wemax one by Xiaomi claiming a whopping lie of 7000 ansi lumens for only £1500. The give away that Wemax One by Xiaomi is a FAKE product is firstly the price point is way too low, especially for a laser projector. For example by comparison a 5000 lumen projector by Casio is almost £6000 so a genuine 7000 ansi lumen model would be a significantly higher price if it were genuine. The actual brightness of the Wemax One by Xiaomi projector could be as low as 1000 to 1500 ansi lumens but is expensive for its brightness levels simply because laser components are much more expensive than their LED counterparts
Secondly, the giveaway that Wemax One is a fake description is when you see actual video footage of it at 7000 lumens the Wemax should be jumping off the walls in broad daylight with brightness when in ultra short throw but its a dull image as can be seen below. The (fake) brighter images displayed are always stills that are photoshopped so always try and look for a video of the product (often on the product pages themselves under the still images).
Wemax One Claiming 7000 Ansi Lumens Laser VERSUS a Vivitek DW763Z Laser 4000 lumen UST
On paper, the Vivitek (2nd image) is stated at almost half the brightness at 4000 lumens of the Wemax One (7000 lumens) yet these images below showing both projectors in action (not photoshopped) show the Wemax is a fraction of the actual brightness of the Vivitek DW763Z-ust yet Wemax claims to be almost twice the brightness of the Vivitek projector. The Benq W1600UST is also worth looking at for a genuine low cost high brightness (3,300 ansi lumen) UST projector.

The Sony Experia Touch interactive projector has been around a while now but with it's latest android upgrade it's potential as a hugely versatile ultra short throw projector has started to become more widely noticed.
Being able to turn any flat surface into an interactive android screen may seem like the stuff of science fiction, but the future is now and Sony want to dive right into Minority Report. With both voice and gesture control multiple people can interact with the screen, ideal for collaborative work and play.
The most impressive feature is the ultra short throw capabilities of the Experia Touch: it is capable of projecting images diagonally up to 80 inches while sitting at a distance of around 38 centimetres from the surface it’s projecting on.
Running off Android 7.1.1 means you can do almost everything you can do on a tablet and still retain some portability with a 1.5 hour battery life. Features like Miracast and on-board apps all combine to deliver a familiar and surprisingly responsive user interface, perfect for quick set up and public use.
There is one main drawback to using this futuristic ultra short throw projector, with only 100 lumens of brightness on offer it cannot handle daylight or a lit room, which seems odd for a projector that costs over £1,500.00. Lumens can be tricky to understand, especially when buying online, so we suggest you read our guide to brightness before you next look at projector specifications.
Even for the steep price tag you will have to settle for 720p and a contrast ratio of 4000-1, not full 1080p HD, so if you wanted the rich visuals of a true home cinema projector you should look at our short throw home cinema buyers guide here.
There is no doubt the Xperia heralds a new age in projections, the possibilities for shops, bars and exhibitions is immense. We definitely will be seeing a lot more of this interactive projection technology in the future and we can't wait!
